Thou Lord, art good, and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy. Psalm 86:5
There's nothing quite so frustrating as trying to help someone who refuses to be helped. You phone and they don't understand. You meet them and they smile and say everything's ok. You know that there's a language barrier and there are things that desperately need sorting and yet they won't give you any help, no way in, just "go away and leave us alone."
I'm sure that's how God sometimes feels about me. Scripture says "Ask and you shall receive." But what if we ask and then totally miss the answer - we're too busy, not listening, having a bad day, totally tied up with ourselves and not looking to God. Or perhaps we're feeling guilty about something and feel unable to accept the gift offered.
Now, in the first scene, we may well go away and leave them alone. There comes a time when we have to admit defeat. But in the second scene, does God walk away? I don't think so. Put it this way, I've never known Him to walk away from me, and I can be extremely annoying and dense when I've a mind to. Before I was a Christian I made it my mission to be the most aggravating person you could ever meet!
So what does God do when He tries to help us and we won't let Him? He waits. He tries something else, and He keeps trying something else until we start looking for Him, start needing Him, start trying to listen to Him and we need to realise that He has the patience of eternity.
Then you will call, and the LORD will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. Isaiah 58:9a
Have a great week!
